La guerra dei mondi di Steven Spielberg è strepitosamente avvincente sia sul piano narrativo che spettacolare. Tratto dal romanzo di H.G. Wells pubblicato nel 1898, il film aggiorna la storia con una moderna visione, grazie alla quale Tom Cruise, nel ruolo dell'operaio specializzato in crisi con le strutture tradizionali della sua vita, e Tim Robbins, nel ruolo del paranoico, si trovano a far fronte ad una minaccia aliena. Gli alieni (tripodi) arrivano emozionanti, ma Spielberg riesce a evitare lo stupido horror, uscendo dall'antico cliché di scienziati sentenziosi o giornalisti petulanti. La sua capacità non è solo favolistica, è anche quella di dare un messaggio, in questo caso che la fragilità della società può essere ricompattata grazie a sentimenti quali la famiglia e l'orgoglio di un popolo.
