Quando l'analista militare americano Daniel Ellsberg si rende conto della profondità degli inganni del governo statunitense sull'inutilità della guerra del Vietnam, sottrae documenti top-secret diventati poi i Pentagon Papers. La proprietaria del Washington Post, Kay Graham, si sta adattando al rilevare la società del defunto marito quando l'editore Ben Bradlee scopre che New York Times ha pubblicato un'esposizione esplosiva su quei giornali. Determinato a competere, il Post scopre lo stesso Ellsberg ed una copia completa dei documenti. Tuttavia, un ordine restrittivo federale mette a repentaglio i piani di pubblicazione. Le scoperte dei giornalisti del Post pone una decisone cruciale a Graham, se smettere l'inchiesta per la sicurezzadell'emittente o lottare per la libertà di stampa.
