Lina è una ragazza timida e ricca. Un giorno conosce in treno Johnnie Aysgart, dongiovanni e giocatore. Nonostante venga a conoscenza di questi particolari, Lina si innamora di lui e lo sposa, rompendo per questo anche con la famiglia, contraria alle nozze. Johnnie continua la sua vita anche dopo il matrimonio; dopo aver perso il posto a causa di un piccolo furto, si mette in affari con l'amico Beaky. Lina sospetta che Johnnie voglia liberarsi di Beaky per impadronirsi della società e in effetti Beaky muore mentre è in viaggio con l'amico. Il film, trattoda un bel romanzo di Francis Iles, resta uno dei più proverbialmente hitchcockiani (l'inquadratura di Cary Grant che sale le scale portando il bicchiare di latte luminescente).
